In 1777, Philadelphia gunsmith Joseph Belton offered the Continental Congress a "new enhanced gun", which was effective at firing nearly twenty pictures in 5 seconds; contrary to more mature repeaters applying complex lever-motion mechanisms, it used an easier technique of superposed hundreds, and was loaded with an individual huge paper cartridge.
